Notes on a day

Every day detail page has a Notes section. It holds one note for that trading day — whatever you want to record about it, in your own words.

Adding a note

Open any day from the Calendar. Above the day’s numbers you’ll see Add a note. Click it, type, and click Save.

The note opens as a form: a box for each of your sections (The plan, What happened and What I would change, until you set your own under Settings → Journal). Write in the boxes that apply and leave the others empty: a section left empty is not saved with the note. A section for this note alone is added with the field under the boxes.

Notes save explicitly. Nothing is stored until you press Save, and Cancel discards what you typed. If you move to another day or leave the page with unsaved changes, PropStax asks first: Stay keeps you writing, Continue leaves and the changes are lost. A note holds up to 2,000 characters in all, the titles of its sections included — about three or four paragraphs — with one counter under the boxes.

Each box has buttons for bold, italics, underline and the two kinds of list, and everything else you type is shown as you typed it. A web address stays plain text and is never a link, and nothing in a note can open, load or run anything — see Formatting.

A note written before the sections opens with its words in a first box captioned Before the sections, and your sections under it. That first box has no heading of its own: its words stand above the sections, as they were written.

Editing and deleting

Once a note exists, the section shows it with two controls on the heading row:

  • Pencil — reopen the note for editing.
  • Trash — delete it. You’ll be asked to confirm first, in place. There’s no undo.

Save keeps whatever the note holds, words or tags alone. With nothing left, neither words nor a tag, the button reads Delete note and removes the note, as the trash icon does. Ctrl+Enter only ever saves.

Prop and Personal notes are separate

The same date carries two independent notes: one for your prop accounts and one for your personal accounts. The Prop | Personal switch (in the top bar on a desktop, in the More sheet on a phone) decides which one you’re looking at.

This is deliberate — the two books are separate businesses, and a note about one would be noise on the other. Switching modes on a day page swaps the note along with everything else.

Tagging a note

The note editor has a Tags input below the note’s boxes. It draws on the same tag library your accounts use, so a tag you already use on accounts autocompletes here, and a new name typed here is added to the library the same way. A note can carry tags alone, with no words: erase the words, keep the tag, and save.

A note holds up to 10 tags. Deleting a tag from Settings → Preferences → Tag library removes it from your notes as well as your accounts — see Tag library.

Seeing which days have notes

Days that have a note show a small dot beside the day number on the Calendar grid, and days with trade or position entries show a second dot in another color, so you can find what you wrote without opening each day; hovering a day says how many entries it holds. On a phone the same dots sit on the cards of the days the agenda lists.

To turn them off, go to Settings → Journal and set Calendar visibility to No dots; the same row picks each dot’s color. The notes and entries themselves are unaffected — only the dots on the grid change.

Which days you can write on

Notes go on real calendar dates from 2000 onward, up to a few days ahead of today. The prev/next arrows on a day page will happily walk you further out than that; when they do, the section says notes aren’t available for that date rather than offering a box that can’t be saved.

An existing note stays readable on any date.

If you have the same day open twice

Notes are guarded against overwriting each other. If the day is open in two places and you save in both, the second save stops and shows you what’s currently stored — including its tags — with your own text still in the box. Nothing is merged automatically; saving again replaces the stored version with yours.

The same thing happens if you’re editing a note when a tag it carries is deleted from the library, since that changes the stored note.

All your notes: the Journal page

Journal in the sidebar (on a phone, in the More sheet) lists everything you have written on the book you are viewing, newest first — the Prop | Personal switch decides which, as it does everywhere — in three tabs: Notes (these day notes), Positions and Trades (the entries described in Journaling trades and positions). Each tab’s name carries how many the book holds (100+ past a hundred). On the Notes tab each row shows its date, the text, and its tags, and Open day takes you to that day’s detail page, where the note can be edited; the back link there returns you to the tab you left. On the Positions and Trades tabs the entries sit under their day, whose heading carries the date, the count and the one Open day, and folds the day’s rows when pressed; each row carries Open position or Open trade, which open the entry’s own page (see The trade page and the position page), a pencil on a trade entry to edit it in place, and a trash icon, the one place an entry whose trade is gone can be removed.

Each tab loads fifty at a time; Load more fetches the next fifty. A note is still written on its day page, next to the day’s numbers; a trade or position entry on its own page. An existing trade entry can also be edited on the Journal page itself.

Filtering. Under the tabs, two controls narrow the list. All tags opens your tags; tick one or more and the list shows the entries carrying any of them. Dates opens a small calendar: press the first day, then the last, for a range, or the same day twice for a single day; the arrows page the months. The filters apply to every tab, stay in the page’s address, so Open day and the entry pages bring you back to the filtered list, and Clear filters removes both.

Notes and the journal

A note is about the day. For what happened on one trade, or across a position, open the trade or the position from the Trades list on the same page and write on its page — see Journaling trades and positions. The trade and position journal is part of Pro; day notes are on both plans.
