The trade page and the position page

Every row of the trade lists on the Calendar and on an account page carries Open, at its right end. It takes you to a page for that row: a trade page for a round trip, a position page for the run from flat to flat that one or more trades make up. The two pages are the same page looking at different things: the position page lists its trades, and each trade page knows its position.

Opening a page

  • On the Trades section of a day page on the Calendar (a week or month page lists its days, each opening its day page), and on an account page, each row is itself the link, with a chevron at its right end. Under the FIFO view it opens the trade, or the position when the trade is the only one of it that closed on the day or on the page; under the Position view it opens the position, or the trade when the round trip could not be placed in one.
  • On the Journal page, Open trade and Open position sit beside Open day on the Positions and Trades tabs.
  • In the Journal window opened from an entry, Open the full page of the trade or of the position at the bottom opens the page of the tab you are on, or the position’s page whichever tab when the trade is the only one of its position there. A window opened from a page carries no link to that same page.

The link at the top of a page, named for where you came from (Day, Journal, Account and so on), returns you there. Going from a trade page to its position page and back again still returns you to the list you started from.

The trade page

The header names the contract, the side, the size, the account and the day. Under it, when the trade belongs to a position, Trade 2 of 5 in this position links the position page, and the arrows step to the previous and next trade in it.

A trade that is the only one in its position has no page of its own: a link to it opens the position page, which is the same event, and an entry written on the trade before shows there as well. If the position could not be read when the link opened, the trade page stays and offers to read it again; the position’s entry appears once it is read, and the trade’s own entry stays when one was written, or when it could not be read. A window already open keeps its tabs.

The tiles carry the round trip’s figures:

  • Net P&L, or Gross P&L when the Personal book’s switch is on Gross. A trade whose fees were not available at its last sync shows a dash with the reason, as its row does.
  • Commission & fees — the same cost the row’s breakdown line shows. On a Prop account it is the one figure the firm charges; on a Tradovate prop account the tile names the all-in rate per contract. A cost is shown only when it includes every fee, so a trade without a net shows a dash here too.
  • Hold time, Opened at and Closed at — the duration, and the price and time of the open and the close.
  • Size — the contracts, the side and the contract code.

Below the tiles are two journal sections, this trade and the position, each showing its entry as written, with its tags and pictures, under a heading that carries the pencil at its left and the trash at its right. The pencil opens the Journal window on that entry’s tab with the entry open for editing, and Add an entry opens it on a new one, with a box for each of your sections (see Journaling trades and positions): the text, the tags and the pictures are edited there and nowhere on the page, and the window closes when you save. The trash deletes the entry, after a confirmation on the page. A trade the sync could not place in a position has the first section only, and the header says so.

The position page

The header names the contract, the side, the contracts traded, how many trades the position holds, the account and the day, or the span when the position opened on one day and closed on another.

The tiles cover the whole position: Net P&L or Gross P&L, Commission & fees, Hold time from the first open to the last close, Average open and Average close weighted by size, and Largest size held, the most contracts held at once (a dash when the trades’ times are placeholders, as on a statement import), with the trades and contracts traded under it. On a position of one trade on a Tradovate prop account, Commission & fees names the all-in rate, as the trade page does. A position holding a trade without a net shows a dash for its net and its cost: no total is formed from part of one.

Trades in this position lists every round trip in it, each a link to its own page when there are two or more; a position of one trade is one event, and this page is its page. A trade with an entry of its own shows a small journal icon in its row, before its tags. Under that are the journal entries, shown as written under their headings with the pencil and the trash, and edited in the Journal window the same way: on a position of one trade, the trade’s own entry when one was written or could not be read, then the position’s.

Personal and Prop

The Prop | Personal switch (in the top bar on a desktop, in the More sheet on a phone) decides which book you are looking at, on these pages as everywhere. A link to a page on the other book takes you to the Calendar instead; switch books, then open it again.

When a trade has changed

If your broker has corrected or removed a trade since a link to it was made, a position page opened from that link shows the position its trade is in now, and says so in a line under the header. A page whose trade is no longer in your book says that, and offers the day it closed on; anything you wrote about it is still listed on the Journal page.

Plans

Reading the pages is on both plans. Writing a new entry, and adding a picture, is part of Pro, as it is from a row; an entry that exists can be read and edited on any plan.
